That first drop-off at kindergarten is a big moment, for your child and for you. The good news is that a little preparation in the weeks and months beforehand can turn nervous energy into excitement. Here at Asasa Academy in Calgary, we’ve walked hundreds of families through this milestone, so we’ve pulled together the tips that genuinely make a difference.
It’s tempting to focus on ABCs and 123s, but research shows the biggest predictor of a smooth start is a steady daily rhythm. Begin shifting bedtime and wake-up times to match the school schedule a few weeks before day one, and practice the full morning routine– waking up, dressing, eating breakfast– as a dry run. If your child still naps, start trimming nap time gradually, since kindergarten rest periods are typically shorter than preschool.
Kindergarten classrooms move fast, and children who can manage small tasks on their own tend to feel more confident. Practice things like using the bathroom independently, opening lunch containers, zipping up a jacket, and holding a pencil to form letters. Turn it into a game rather than a drill– the goal is comfort, not perfection.
It’s normal for kids (and parents!) to feel nervous. Child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Karen Manotas notes that school transitions are “a significant emotional milestone” for the whole family. Ask your child what they’re curious or unsure about, acknowledge nervousness as normal, and frame kindergarten as a place where trying new things – and making mistakes – is simply part of learning.
If you can, arrange a playdate or two with future classmates before the first bell rings. Familiar faces on day one make a real difference in how quickly children settle in. A school visit, meet-the-teacher event, or open house also helps your child put a face to a name and picture the classroom before they ever set foot in it.
When the first day comes, keep drop-off calm and brief: a hug, an “I love you,” and a confident goodbye go further than a long, drawn-out farewell. Reassure your child you’ll be back, and resist the urge to linger if they get upset – most children settle within minutes of a parent leaving.
Every child adjusts at their own pace. Preparation sets the stage, but the real learning happens once the school year begins — which is exactly why routine, patience, and encouragement matter just as much in the weeks after kindergarten starts as they do beforehand.
At Asasa Academy, our Kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten programs are designed to help children build these exact skills – independence, curiosity, and confidence – in a warm, structured environment.
