The transition from kindergarten to grade school marks a significant milestone in your child’s development. A shift occurs from the playful world of kindergarten to a more structured environment where the focus begins to revolve more around accomplishing goals and academic progression. As a parent, you play a critical role in ensuring your child feels supported and is able to undergo this transition with ease and positivity. Below are some tips to keep your first grader engaged and foster strong habits for a smooth transition into the long road of schooling ahead.

One of the simplest ways to help a child through any type of transition is by establishing a consistent routine in the home. Feelings of safety, control and comfort follow a sense of routine as children thrive on predictability. “Having a routine allows your child the peace of knowing what to expect in their day and gives them a sense of control of their environment”. Setting regular wake up, meal, play and bed time schedules is a great place to start.
Create a dedicated study space in your home. As long as the space is relatively distraction free, quiet and comfortable, it can serve as the perfect study nook. A spot with natural lighting is an added bonus as direct, safe sun exposure has been proven to increase mood and concentration in children. Having this area that is designated solely to studying will help your child associate it with learning, making it easier for them to focus and get down to work when it is necessary.

It goes without saying but it is critical that you make learning fun. By incorporating play-based learning activities, studying becomes something enjoyable, opposed to the “dreaded” task that it is routinely associated with. Use educational games, flashcards, and interactive tools to teach concepts and strengthen memory. Learning through play is essential in fostering a child’s cognitive growth by strengthening and increasing neural connections in the brain and it makes for a more positive experience for all involved.
The step up from Kindergarten to Grade 1 is a time for your child to begin to develop a sense of independence, likely for the first time in their life. Encourage them to start to take responsibility for their belongings, such as organizing their school bag and making sure they have everything they need for the day. This not only instills a sense of responsibility but it also helps them feel more in control of their day-to-day life and sets them up with beneficial habits moving forwards.
At the end of the day, the only person who knows exactly how they are feeling and how they are coping with these changes is your child. Make time for a peaceful moment at the end of the day to check in with them and ask how their day was. It is important to ask detailed questions that are likely to get a more elaborate response from your little one. “Did you talk to anyone new? Did anything funny happen today? Did you learn anything confusing?” are all examples of questions that are likely to spark more than one word responses and start up a conversation.

With all this in mind it is important to remember that no matter how much support and encouragement you give your child, it is not always going to be easy or go according to plan. Each child’s needs are unique and there will never be a one-size fits all guide. The transition from kindergarten to Grade 1 is a significant step in your child’s academic journey at Asasa Academy.
